FAQs - What to know about the LRDP
What is an LRDP?
A Long Range Development Plan (LRDP) is a comprehensive plan that guides the physical development to achieve the UC mission at its campuses. LRDPs address academic and administrative space needs, housing, open space, circulation, parking, infrastructure, and other land uses that ultimately facilitate the appropriate siting of capital projects. The LRDP also provides the foundation for environmental review under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).
How is the 2027 LRDP different from past plans?
The 2027 LRDP reflects updated planning assumptions, environmental standards and regional priorities. It considers current and projected needs related to enrollment, sustainability, climate resilience and community partnerships. While past plans often emphasized expansion, this LRDP focuses on flexibility, efficient land use and the evolving needs of a modern research university. It accounts for the potential to rebuild or reuse existing facilities, adapt to hybrid and remote work and learning modalities, and prioritize infill development over outward growth.
What happens after the UC Regents approve the plan?
Once approved, the LRDP serves as a guiding document for future campus development. Individual capital projects must still go through detailed planning, design, environmental review and budget approval. The LRDP enables more coordinated and policy-aligned decision-making over time, but it does not authorize specific construction projects.
How do I get involved or stay informed?
UC Irvine offers several ways for stakeholders to engage with the LRDP process. Community briefings, public forums and planning updates are shared through campus and city channels. Contact us to learn about milestones, public review periods and opportunities to provide feedback.
